All summer long, the Landes region comes alive with ferias. Dozens of celebrations decked out in red and white are spread over the length of the summer. The point of pride of the festivities are the courses landaises, in which competitors try to avoid the horns of bulls.
Of all these ferias, the one in Dax is undoubtedly the most famous. Each year, these festivities of Spanish origin transform the town into an unequalled place of celebration, with bullfighting shows, parades, concerts and bandas (local brass bands). The feria is a huge daytime and nighttime folk celebration, when everyone dresses in white with a red scarf and belt, and has a blast. The event lasts five days and always takes place during the first half of August, more specifically around the weekend of Assumption Day (15 August).
On the programme are an official opening ceremony led by the mayor, the handing over of the keys to the city, days full of activities (bullfighting shows, folk music performances, sporting events and food workshops), festive nights and of course the official closing ceremony. During the feria, you will embark in a festive atmosphere to the tune of the bandas landaises, brass bands which provide fantastic entertainment. The bandas are so renowned for their popular performances that it is inconceivable to hold a feria without them. Their music also accompanies and gives rhythm to each part of the corridas. During these days of festivities, you won’t want to miss the bullfighting shows. Enthusiasts of all ages meet up each year in the bullring. Experience thrills as you watch the picadors confront the bulls. Your kids will also have a ball during the celebrations, with the second day of the feria dedicated to them. They will enjoy the various activities and games, like bouncy castles, giant versions of games, the Juniorscapade (a foot race limited to children) and dancing and circus workshops. If you love sport, you can participate in the athletic programme, including a Feriascapade (a 10K foot race through the streets of town), a tennis tournament and Basque pelota matches. During the feria, experience cheerful moments with family or friends, and be sure to drink with moderation, even though the alcoholic beverages will be flowing freely.
